How to Save Money on Wedding Catering

by | Nov 27, 2014 | Restaurants

If you are like most brides and grooms to be, you want to save as much money as possible while still having the perfect wedding. This can be tough, especially when you have to consider the wedding dress, flowers, décor, rentals and catering. Most couples greatly underestimate the amount of money that will be needed for food and catering, which could cost you more money for the wedding. It is best to put back about 30 to 40 percent of the budget on the food alone, so that you ensure you get exactly what you want. However, there are also some tips that can help you save a little money while still being a gracious hostess.

Hire Someone

It may sound strange that doing-it-yourself wouldn’t be a good idea, but DIY catering or potlucks just aren’t the best option. Many people, especially elders, would feel offended at the thought of bringing food to your party and it can still be problematic to figure out how to keep everything at the right temperature and who will serve.

Instead, consider a caterer, as they have the experience, training and supplies needed to do the job well. If you want to save a little money, stay away from catering services that specifically mention weddings in their name, as they may be a little overpriced. Focus on the local restaurants that do catering, as they will usually offer better prices.

No Meal

Try not to schedule your wedding for the late afternoon, because the reception will be right around dinnertime, making it a must to provide dinner to all the guests. Instead, consider morning weddings or early afternoon weddings and do a brunch or “afternoon tea” option.

If you really want to serve a meal, go for a lunch meal, as it will be less expensive than dinner and will still feed all the guests. You can choose less expensive foods, and guests will likely eat less for lunch than dinner.

No Buffet

Most couples believe that a sit-down or plated meal costs more than a buffet, and while that is usually true, it depends on the buffet and plated meals you select. If you offer a buffet with everything but the kitchen sink, it will cost you, but if you were to offer a plated meal of salads or quiche instead of steak, it could save you money.
